Golden Corral closures reach at least seven states in 2026 as buffet chain faces cost pressure
Locations in Texas, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Idaho, Illinois and Missouri have shut this year; the privately held company has not filed for bankruptcy.

A string of closures
Golden Corral, the Raleigh, North Carolina-based buffet chain, has closed restaurants in at least seven states this year, according to a tally of local reports. A MassLive article republished by Yahoo Finance on October 9 counted at least six closures in six states in 2026, ranging from a Canton, Ohio, location that shut on February 1 to a Brownsville, Texas, restaurant that closed on September 14 after 35 years.[1]
The other closures on that list were in Boynton Beach, Florida, on July 26 after 20 years; Davenport, Iowa, on July 6 after 28 years; Boise, Idaho, in September after 25 years; and Alton, Illinois, on April 23 after 27 years. Causes were not made public in several cases.[1]
A seventh state was added in early October. The Kansas City Star reported that the restaurant at 19120 E. Valley View Parkway in Independence, Missouri, was closing after about 15 years, according to a Hoodline summary of that report. Two other locations in the Kansas City area remained open, employees said.[2]
Reasons cited
Where reasons were given, they were specific to each site. The Brownsville restaurant cited a large rent increase, according to MySA reporting summarized by MassLive, while the Boynton Beach location closed when its lease expired. In Alton, the franchisee posted a note saying it could not staff the store well enough to serve guests, TheStreet reported in April.[1][3]
Broader costs are rising. MassLive cited Bureau of Labor Statistics data showing prices for food away from home rose 3.4% in the 12 months through August 2026, and a USDA outlook showing beef prices in July were 9.4% higher than a year earlier.[1]
Company position
Golden Corral has not filed for bankruptcy, and as a privately held company it does not publish financial reports, the Kansas City Star reported. The company did not respond to the newspaper's request for comment on the Independence closure. Individual franchisees have sought court protection in the past, including South Texas Corral LLC, which filed for Chapter 11 in June 2025, according to TheStreet.[2]
Chief Executive Lance Trenary told FSR Magazine this year that loyal guests visit roughly 1.5 times a week but are dining out less often than before. He said the chain would not cut menu quality to offset inflation, according to MassLive's account of the interview.[1]
How big the chain is
Estimates of Golden Corral's footprint vary by source and date. Data firm ScrapeHero counted about 400 locations in 41 states and territories as of June 2025, Hoodline reported. TheStreet counted about 340 U.S. and Puerto Rico restaurants on the company's store locator in April 2026, with 41 listed as permanently closed. The chain, founded in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1973, ranked 46th in Technomic's 2025 list of top chains.[2][3]
The company has not published a total for 2026 closures, and the reports above do not establish whether more locations are scheduled to shut. In April it announced six new buffet locations in development in the United States and Puerto Rico, Hoodline reported, citing a company release. Further closures, if any, are likely to surface first through local notices at individual restaurants.[2]
