How this tracker works

The federal WARN Act generally requires employers with 100 or more workers to give 60 days’ notice of plant closings and mass layoffs, and some states, including California, have their own versions with wider coverage. States publish the notices they receive. We read the lists published by California, Texas and Maryland twice a day. More states will be added as we confirm their data. California’s list covers notices processed since the start of its fiscal year on July 1.

Worker counts are what the employer reported in the notice; final numbers can differ. A company can file several notices for different sites. SEC filings cover public companies nationwide but do not always give a number of jobs.
