Based on the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted. Years use annual averages.

How it’s calculated

We divide the price index for the later period by the index for the earlier one and multiply your amount by that ratio. Each category has its own index, so groceries, rent or gasoline can move very differently from overall prices.

Indexes are the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, U.S. city average, not seasonally adjusted. A year uses the average of its 12 months; the latest month is the most recent BLS release.

Worked example

If the index averaged 258.8 in 2020 and is 320.0 now, $100 of 2020 purchases costs $100 × 320.0 ÷ 258.8 = $123.65 today.
